Question 1

How do I sync subtitles with my video?

Accepted Answer

Drag your subtitle file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Choose Earlier or Later, and enter how many seconds to move the subtitles. Check the preview, and click Shift subtitles and then Download.

Question 2

How do I find out how far to move them?

Accepted Answer

Find a line that is easy to hear, and note the time it is spoken and the time its subtitle appears. The difference between the two is how far to move the subtitles. In VLC, you can also press G or H during playback to move the subtitles in 50 ms steps until they line up. The Track Synchronization window then shows the delay you set.

Question 3

What if the subtitles drift further out of sync as the video plays?

Accepted Answer

Then they were made for a version of the video with a different frame rate, and moving them by one amount won't fix it. Use Change subtitle frame rate instead.

Question 4

What happens to subtitles near the start when I move them earlier?

Accepted Answer

A subtitle that would end before 0:00 is removed, and one that would start before 0:00 starts at 0:00 instead.

Question 5

Which subtitle files can I use?

Accepted Answer

SRT, VTT, ASS, SSA and SBV files. The new file is saved in the same format, and everything apart from the timings stays exactly as it was.
