Question 1

How do I convert an MP4 file to WAV?

Accepted Answer

Drag your MP4 file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish. Click Download to save the WAV file.

Question 2

Is WAV the right format for my MP4 video?

Accepted Answer

Choose WAV if you plan to edit the sound in an audio or video editor. WAV is uncompressed, and editing and saving it again loses no more quality. For listening or sharing, WAV files are needlessly large. MP4 to MP3 gives a file about a fifth of the size that sounds the same to almost every listener.

Question 3

Is the WAV file lossless?

Accepted Answer

The WAV file is uncompressed. MakeAudio decodes the sound in the video and saves it as 16-bit PCM, the standard format for WAV files. Nothing more is lost in the conversion. WAV can't bring back detail that was lost when the video was made. MP4 videos usually store their sound as AAC, which is a compressed format. The WAV holds that sound exactly, without compressing it again.

Question 4

How big will the WAV file be?

Accepted Answer

WAV files are large because the sound is not compressed. Most videos have 48 kHz stereo sound, which takes about 11.5 MB per minute as WAV. A 4-minute music video becomes a WAV file of about 46 MB. A 1-hour lecture or webinar becomes a WAV file of about 690 MB.

Question 5

Why isn't my video accepted?

Accepted Answer

This page accepts MP4 files, whose names end in .mp4 or .m4v. Videos from iPhones are often MOV files, and screen recorders often save WebM or MKV files. Check the end of the file name and use the matching converter: MOV to WAV, WebM to WAV or MKV to WAV. Video to WAV accepts all of these formats.

Question 6

Will the WAV file open in my audio editor?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The WAV file uses 16-bit PCM, which every audio and video editor opens, including Audacity, GarageBand, Logic Pro, Adobe Audition and Premiere Pro. The sample rate stays the same as in the video, usually 48 kHz.

Question 7

Does the WAV file keep the title, artist and cover art?

Accepted Answer

Partly. Basic tags such as title, artist and album are copied. Cover art is left out, because standard WAV tags can't store pictures. To add or change tags, use Edit audio metadata.

Question 8

Can I convert only part of the video?

Accepted Answer

This page converts the whole sound track. To keep just one part, convert the video first and then cut the WAV file with Trim WAV file.
