Question 1

How do I convert an MP4 file to MP3?

Accepted Answer

Drag your MP4 file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish. Click Download to save the MP3 file.

Question 2

Is MP3 the right format for my MP4 video?

Accepted Answer

Choose MP3 when you want a file that plays everywhere: phones, car stereos, music apps and website upload forms. If you want to keep the sound exactly as it is in the video, choose MP4 to M4A instead. It copies the AAC sound without re-encoding it.

Question 3

Will the MP3 sound as good as the video?

Accepted Answer

In almost every case, yes. MP4 videos usually store their sound as AAC. To make the MP3, MakeAudio decodes that sound and encodes it again at 320 kbps, the highest MP3 quality. Re-encoding can remove a tiny amount of detail, but the difference is very hard to hear. Converting can't make the sound better than the original. If the audio in the video is quiet, noisy or muffled, the MP3 will be too.

Question 4

How big will the MP3 file be?

Accepted Answer

The size depends only on how long the sound is, not on the size or quality of the video. At 320 kbps, each minute of sound takes a little over 2 MB. A 4-minute music video becomes an MP3 of about 9.6 MB. A 1-hour lecture or webinar becomes an MP3 of about 140 MB.

Question 5

Can I convert M4V files from Apple devices?

Accepted Answer

Yes. M4V is Apple's version of MP4, and this page accepts it. Films and TV shows bought or rented from the iTunes Store are copy-protected, and MakeAudio can't read their sound.

Question 6

Which sound is used if the video has more than one audio track?

Accepted Answer

Some MP4 files, such as films and TV episodes, have more than one audio track. MakeAudio converts the main track, which is usually the one marked as the default. To convert a different track, first use Select audio track to keep only the track you want.

Question 7

Why isn't my video accepted?

Accepted Answer

This page accepts MP4 files, whose names end in .mp4 or .m4v. Videos from iPhones are often MOV files, and screen recorders often save WebM or MKV files. Check the end of the file name and use the matching converter: MOV to MP3, WebM to MP3 or MKV to MP3. Video to MP3 accepts all of these formats.

Question 8

Can I make the MP3 file smaller?

Accepted Answer

This page always saves MP3 files at 320 kbps, the highest quality. To make the file smaller, run it through Compress MP3 file, which offers 192, 128 and 96 kbps. For speech, 128 kbps is plenty.

Question 9

Does the MP3 file keep the title, artist and cover art?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when the video has them. Tags such as title, artist and album are copied, along with any cover art. Phone videos and screen recordings usually have no tags. To add or change tags, use Edit MP3 metadata.

Question 10

Can I convert only part of the video?

Accepted Answer

This page converts the whole sound track. To keep just one part, convert the video first and then cut the MP3 file with Trim MP3 file.

Question 11

Is it free, and is my video uploaded?

Accepted Answer

It's free, with no account needed, for up to 3 conversions a day across all MakeAudio tools. Only finished conversions count. Your video is never uploaded: it is converted on your own device.

Question 12

Can I convert a YouTube video or a link?

Accepted Answer

No. MakeAudio converts video files saved on your device and can't download videos from YouTube or other websites. Only convert videos you have the right to use.

Question 13

Does it work on phones, and is there a size limit?

Accepted Answer

It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. There is no limit on file size: the video is read in small pieces, and even files of several gigabytes work. Recordings several hours long work best on a computer. MakeAudio converts one file at a time.

Question 14

What if my video has no sound or won't convert?

Accepted Answer

If the video has no sound, MakeAudio tells you as soon as you add it. If a video with sound won't convert, its sound may use a format your browser can't read. Try again in the latest version of Chrome or Edge on a computer.
