Question 1

How do I convert an MP4 file to M4A?

Accepted Answer

Drag your MP4 file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish. Click Download to save the M4A file.

Question 2

Is M4A the right format for my MP4 video?

Accepted Answer

Usually, yes. Most MP4 videos store their sound as AAC, and M4A keeps that sound exactly as it is. You get the original quality in a small file. Choose MP4 to MP3 instead only if an app or device doesn't accept M4A files.

Question 3

Does converting to M4A lose quality?

Accepted Answer

Usually not. Most MP4 videos store their sound as AAC. MakeAudio copies that sound into an M4A file exactly as it is, with no re-encoding and no quality loss. Sound in another format, such as Dolby Digital, is converted to AAC at 192 kbps.

Question 4

How big will the M4A file be?

Accepted Answer

When AAC sound is copied as it is, the M4A file is about the same size as the sound track inside the video, usually 1 to 2 MB per minute. Sound that has to be converted is saved at 192 kbps, which takes about 1.4 MB per minute.

Question 5

Why isn't my video accepted?

Accepted Answer

This page accepts MP4 files, whose names end in .mp4 or .m4v. Videos from iPhones are often MOV files, and screen recorders often save WebM or MKV files. Check the end of the file name and use the matching converter: MOV to M4A, WebM to M4A or MKV to M4A.

Question 6

Will the M4A file play on iPhone and in Apple Music?

Accepted Answer

Yes. M4A is Apple's standard audio format. It plays in Apple Music, on iPhones and Macs, and on Android and Windows too.

Question 7

Does the M4A file keep the title, artist and cover art?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when the video has them. Tags such as title, artist and album are copied, along with any cover art. Phone videos and screen recordings usually have no tags. To add or change tags, use Edit audio metadata.

Question 8

Can I convert only part of the video?

Accepted Answer

This page converts the whole sound track. To keep just one part, convert the video first and then cut the M4A file with Trim M4A file.
