Question 1

How do I convert an MP4 file to FLAC?

Accepted Answer

Drag your MP4 file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish. Click Download to save the FLAC file.

Question 2

Is FLAC the right format for my MP4 video?

Accepted Answer

Usually not, unless you plan to edit or archive the sound. MP4 videos usually store their sound as AAC, which is a compressed format. FLAC keeps that sound without any further loss, but it can't restore detail that was already removed. The FLAC file ends up much bigger without sounding better. For listening, MP4 to MP3 or MP4 to M4A gives a far smaller file that sounds just as good.

Question 3

Is the FLAC file lossless?

Accepted Answer

Yes. FLAC is lossless: it makes the file smaller without throwing any of the sound away. MakeAudio decodes the sound in the video and stores all of it in the FLAC file.

Question 4

How big will the FLAC file be?

Accepted Answer

FLAC files are much bigger than MP3 or M4A files, because no sound is thrown away. How much FLAC can shrink the sound depends on the sound itself: speech and quiet recordings shrink more than busy music. Because the picture is left out, the FLAC file is usually still much smaller than the video.

Question 5

Why isn't my video accepted?

Accepted Answer

This page accepts MP4 files, whose names end in .mp4 or .m4v. Videos from iPhones are often MOV files, and screen recorders often save WebM or MKV files. Check the end of the file name and use the matching converter: MOV to FLAC, WebM to FLAC or MKV to FLAC.

Question 6

Does the FLAC file keep the title, artist and cover art?

Accepted Answer

Yes, when the video has them. Tags such as title, artist and album are copied, along with any cover art. Phone videos and screen recordings usually have no tags. To add or change tags, use Edit audio metadata.

Question 7

Can I convert only part of the video?

Accepted Answer

This page converts the whole sound track. To keep just one part, convert the video first and then cut the FLAC file with Trim FLAC file.
