Question 1

How do I convert an MP3 file to MP4?

Accepted Answer

Drag your MP3 file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Choose a picture, a shape and a background, or keep the ones chosen for you. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish. Click Download to save the MP4 video.

Question 2

Will my MP3 file's cover art be used?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If your MP3 file has cover art, MakeAudio uses it automatically and shows it on the page as soon as you add the file. You can choose your own JPG, PNG or WebP picture instead. Without a picture, the video shows the title and artist from the file's tags on a black or white background. If the file has no title, its file name is used.

Question 3

Will the sound quality change?

Accepted Answer

Very little. Video apps expect AAC sound, and MakeAudio converts the MP3 sound to AAC at 192 kbps. The difference is very hard to hear in music and speech. If you have the same sound as an M4A file, M4A to MP4 copies it into the video without converting it.

Question 4

How big will the video be?

Accepted Answer

About 1.7 MB per minute. The MP3 sound is converted to AAC at 192 kbps, which takes about 1.4 MB per minute. The picture doesn't move, and it adds only about 0.25 MB per minute of video. A 4-minute song makes an MP4 of about 7 MB. A 1-hour podcast makes an MP4 of about 100 MB.

Question 5

Why isn't my file accepted?

Accepted Answer

This page accepts MP3 files, whose names end in .mp3. Check the end of your file's name. For other audio, use the matching page: WAV to MP4, M4A to MP4, AAC to MP4, FLAC to MP4 or OGG to MP4. Audio to video accepts all of these formats.

Question 6

Can I make a video from only part of the MP3 file?

Accepted Answer

This page uses the whole file. To use one part, cut it first with Trim MP3 file, and then convert the shorter file here.

Question 7

Which shape should I choose?

Accepted Answer

Landscape (16:9) fits YouTube and most video players. Square (1:1) fits Instagram posts and WhatsApp. Portrait (9:16) fits Reels, YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Stories. The picture is never cropped. Any space around it is filled with the background you choose: a blurred copy of the picture, black or white.

Question 8

Will the video work on YouTube, Instagram and WhatsApp?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The video is a full HD MP4 file with H.264 video at 30 frames per second and AAC sound. YouTube and Instagram list this format in their upload guidelines, and WhatsApp plays it too.

Question 9

How long does it take?

Accepted Answer

On a recent computer, each minute of sound takes about 10 seconds. A 4-minute song is ready in under a minute. Phones and older computers are slower, because every frame of the video is created on your own device. A progress bar shows how far along the video is. If you switch tabs and allow notifications, MakeAudio tells you when the video is ready.

Question 10

Can the video show a moving waveform or several pictures?

Accepted Answer

No. The video shows one still picture, or the title and artist, for the whole length of the sound. This keeps the file small and quick to make.

Question 11

Is it free, and are my files uploaded?

Accepted Answer

It's free, with no account needed, for up to 3 conversions a day across all MakeAudio tools. Only finished conversions count. Your audio and pictures are never uploaded: the video is made on your own device.

Question 12

Does it work on phones, and is there a size limit?

Accepted Answer

It works in any modern browser on phones, tablets and computers. There is no limit on file size, but the finished video is built in your browser's memory. Recordings several hours long work best on a computer. MakeAudio makes one video at a time.
