Question 1

How do I convert an MKV file to WAV?

Accepted Answer

Drag your MKV file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish. Click Download to save the WAV file.

Question 2

Is WAV the right format for my MKV video?

Accepted Answer

Choose WAV if you plan to edit the sound in an audio or video editor. WAV is uncompressed, and editing and saving it again loses no more quality. For listening or sharing, WAV files are needlessly large. MKV to MP3 gives a file about a fifth of the size that sounds the same to almost every listener.

Question 3

Is the WAV file lossless?

Accepted Answer

The WAV file is uncompressed. MakeAudio decodes the sound in the video and saves it as 16-bit PCM, the standard format for WAV files. Nothing more is lost in the conversion. WAV can't bring back detail that was lost when the video was made. The sound in most MKV videos is already compressed. The WAV holds that sound exactly, without compressing it again.

Question 4

How big will the WAV file be?

Accepted Answer

WAV files are large because the sound is not compressed. Most videos have 48 kHz stereo sound, which takes about 11.5 MB per minute as WAV. A 45-minute TV episode becomes a WAV file of about 520 MB. A 2-hour film becomes a WAV file of about 1.4 GB. A film with 5.1 surround sound keeps all six channels, making the WAV three times as big.

Question 5

Is 5.1 surround sound kept?

Accepted Answer

Yes. The WAV file keeps all six channels.

Question 6

Why isn't my video accepted?

Accepted Answer

This page accepts MKV files, whose names end in .mkv. Most other videos are MP4, MOV or WebM files. Check the end of the file name and use the matching converter: MP4 to WAV, MOV to WAV or WebM to WAV. Video to WAV accepts all of these formats.
