Question 1

How do I convert an MKV file to OGG?

Accepted Answer

Drag your MKV file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish. Click Download to save the OGG file.

Question 2

Is OGG the right format for my MKV video?

Accepted Answer

OGG is a good choice when your MKV file has Opus sound, because that sound is copied exactly as it is. Other sound is converted to Opus at 128 kbps. Apple Music doesn't play OGG files. For Apple devices, choose MKV to M4A.

Question 3

Does converting to OGG lose quality?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the sound in your MKV file. Opus sound is copied exactly as it is. Other formats, such as AAC or Dolby Digital, are converted to Opus at 128 kbps, which is high quality for music and speech.

Question 4

How big will the OGG file be?

Accepted Answer

At 128 kbps, each minute of sound takes about 1 MB. When Opus sound is copied as it is, the file is about the same size as the sound track inside the video. A 45-minute TV episode becomes an OGG file of about 43 MB. A 2-hour film becomes an OGG file of about 120 MB.

Question 5

Is 5.1 surround sound kept?

Accepted Answer

No. The OGG file is saved in stereo, and 5.1 sound is mixed down to two channels. To keep all six channels, use MKV to M4A or MKV to FLAC.

Question 6

Why isn't my video accepted?

Accepted Answer

This page accepts MKV files, whose names end in .mkv. Most other videos are MP4, MOV or WebM files. Check the end of the file name and use the matching converter: MP4 to OGG, MOV to OGG or WebM to OGG.
