Question 1

How do I convert an MKV file to MP3?

Accepted Answer

Drag your MKV file onto the box above, or click Select file to choose it. Click Convert and wait for the progress bar to finish. Click Download to save the MP3 file.

Question 2

Is MP3 the right format for my MKV video?

Accepted Answer

Choose MP3 when you want a file that plays everywhere: phones, car stereos, music apps and website upload forms. If you plan to edit the sound, MKV to WAV or MKV to FLAC keeps it without any further loss.

Question 3

Will the MP3 sound as good as the video?

Accepted Answer

In almost every case, yes. MKV videos can store their sound in many formats, most often AAC, Opus or Dolby Digital. To make the MP3, MakeAudio decodes that sound and encodes it again at 320 kbps, the highest MP3 quality. Re-encoding can remove a tiny amount of detail, but the difference is very hard to hear. Converting can't make the sound better than the original. If the audio in the video is quiet, noisy or muffled, the MP3 will be too.

Question 4

How big will the MP3 file be?

Accepted Answer

The size depends only on how long the sound is, not on the size or quality of the video. At 320 kbps, each minute of sound takes a little over 2 MB. A 45-minute TV episode becomes an MP3 of about 110 MB. A 2-hour film becomes an MP3 of about 290 MB.

Question 5

Which sound is used if the video has more than one audio track?

Accepted Answer

Films and TV episodes in MKV files often have several audio tracks, such as different languages or a director's commentary. MakeAudio converts the main track, which is usually the one marked as the default. To convert a different track, first use Select audio track to keep only the track you want.

Question 6

Is 5.1 surround sound kept?

Accepted Answer

No. MP3 files hold at most two channels. The 5.1 sound is mixed down to stereo. To keep all six channels, use MKV to M4A or MKV to FLAC.

Question 7

Can I convert films with DTS or Dolby TrueHD sound?

Accepted Answer

Not yet. MakeAudio can read Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3) sound. It can't read DTS or Dolby TrueHD yet. If your film has several audio tracks and one of them is Dolby Digital, use Select audio track to keep that track first.

Question 8

Why isn't my video accepted?

Accepted Answer

This page accepts MKV files, whose names end in .mkv. Most other videos are MP4, MOV or WebM files. Check the end of the file name and use the matching converter: MP4 to MP3, MOV to MP3 or WebM to MP3. Video to MP3 accepts all of these formats.
