Does merging re-encode the audio?

Yes. Every file is decoded and the result is encoded again as a single AAC stream. AAC is a lossy format, so the merged file is not a bit-for-bit copy of your originals. The change is usually small and hard to hear, but re-merging a file that has already been merged will compound it, so always start from your original recordings.

What codec and bitrate will the merged file use?

The output is AAC-LC audio in an M4A container, encoded at a target bitrate of 192 kbps. That setting is fixed and does not follow the bitrates of your source files. A file recorded at 64 kbps will therefore come out larger than it went in, without looking any better. A higher output bitrate cannot restore detail that a low-bitrate source already threw away.

Can I merge M4A files with different bitrates, sample rates, or channel counts?

Yes. The first file sets the sample rate and number of channels, and every file after it is adjusted to match. That is what lets you mix a mono voice memo with a stereo recording. For the most consistent result, put your highest quality file first.

Does the order of the files matter?

Yes. The files are joined in the order shown, and you can drag them into any order before merging. The first file is also the one that decides the output's sample rate and channel count.

Will the merged file keep titles, artists, cover art, or chapters?

Accepted Answer

No. The merged file is written fresh and holds the audio only. Track titles, artist and album fields, cover art, and chapter markers from the source files are all dropped. This matters most for audiobooks, where each source file is usually a chapter. The audio plays end to end, but you will not be able to skip between chapters afterwards.

Can I add MP4, M4B, or AAC files here?

This tool accepts files with a.m4a extension or an M4A file type, and quietly ignores anything else you drop in. Audiobook.m4b files hold the same kind of audio in the same container, so renaming a copy to.m4a usually lets you merge it. Raw.aac files use a different container and belong in the Merge AAC files tool. For a video.mp4, extract the audio first.

Does the tool add gaps, crossfades, or normalize the volume?

Accepted Answer

No. Each file starts where the previous one ended. The tool does not insert silence, fade between files, or match their loudness. Voice memos recorded at different distances from the microphone will still jump in volume at the joins, so even them out before merging if that matters.

Yes. AAC-LC in an M4A container is the format Apple devices use themselves, so it plays in the Music and Files apps on iPhone, iPad, and Mac without conversion. Modern Android phones and desktop players handle it too.
