Some DAW templates, mastering chains, and archive specs standardize on 24-bit input. Converting a 16-bit WAV to 24-bit makes it conform, and gives subsequent processing extra headroom so cumulative operations do not eat into the audible floor.
Be clear about the limit: the conversion cannot invent resolution. A 16-bit recording in a 24-bit container still carries 16 bits of real information.
